Unfortunately, if at some point your life circumstances change, you might find yourself unable to care for Gary the Goldfish, or Trevor the Turtle. This is always a very difficult decision to make, but finding a responsible, humane solution is the least you can do for your companion.

NEVER release your unwanted pet into the wild. It is not only inhumane, but also unethical and illegal. What may seem like an act of kindness can wreak havoc on local ecosystems, as some pet species behave invasively in the wild.

The Invasive Species Council of BC recommends the following potential solutions for responsible and humanely disposing of unwanted pets:

  • Contact the retailer where you purchased the animal/fish to see if they will take it back
  • Contact science centers, zoos or aquariums to see if they can use the animal/fish for educational purposes
  • Contact a local shelter, like WAG, PAWS or the BC SPCA.
  • Consider humane euthanasia by a veterinarian
