SSISC’s fieldwork mainly focuses on invasive plants at this point. However, some animal species pose serious threats to the Sea to Sky, but have not been spotted in the region… yet. Currently, SSISC conducts monitoring and prevention work for the following species:
In 2015, SSISC received a report that American Bullfrogs had been heard calling in the Nexen Beach area of the Squamish Estuary.
Since 2017, we have been monitoring lakes in the Sea to Sky for Zebra and Quagga Mussels as part of BC’s Early Detection Lake Monitoring Program.
In 2020, we launched a European Green Crab monitoring program in Howe Sound, in collaboration with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).
