Meet the Team, July Edition

This portion of the team is perennial – they come back each spring, or at least we hope they do! These four clearly know how to survive on a deserted island, but would rather spend their days at higher elevations.

Tatjana Scagliotti

GIS Technician

Where are you from?

Originally from Pickering, Ontario

What is the story behind your photo?

This is a picture of me belaying someone while they are rock climbing. Essentially, I’m keeping them secure and ensuring they don’t hit the ground if they fall off the rock. I just got into the sport this season and I absolutely love it! I like this photo because you can see how concentrated I am.

What’s your favourite way to spend a day off?

Wake up at a decent hour without my alarm, have a coffee (oat milk piccolo from Bred in Whistler, my fav) and breakfast, do an activity like rock climbing, snowboarding or hang out at the lake, and then a bbq in my backyard with my friends!

If you were a plant, what would you be and why?

I think I would be a cedar tree, because I recently learned how to make cedar tea and about some of the medicinal properties of cedar.

What are you most looking forward to while working with SSISC this summer?

I look forward to getting out in the field to test the mapping systems. Specifically, I really want to survey the European Green Crabs!

(Editor’s note: While European Green Crabs have not been found in Howe Sound, we are regularly monitoring the area. However we share Tatjana’s desire to work from the beach!)

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 items would you bring with you?

Water purifier, so I can have clean drinking water. A knife, so I can make other tools, shelter, and hunt. A fire starter, so I can cook and stay warm.

Ellika Cairns

Project Assistant

Where are you from?

I grew up in North Vancouver, but just recently moved to Squamish.

What is the story behind your photo?

This photo was taken at about 4:30am at the summit of Mt. Habrich. My partner and I climbed up there the day before, cowboy camped up top (no tent – just sleeping bags!), and got up super early to watch the sunrise.

What’s your favourite way to spend a day off?

My absolute favourite place to be in the summer is in the alpine, so I love spending my days off trail running, hiking, camping, climbing, and eating wild berries in our local mountains.

If you were a plant, what would you be and why?

If I was a plant, I think I’d be a sunflower. I’m fairly tall, and am always searching for the best spot to soak up some sunshine.

What are you most looking forward to while working with SSISC this summer?

I’m looking forward to spending time out in the field with our Crab Team volunteers, as part of our monitoring program for European Green Crab in Howe Sound.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 items would you bring with you?

I’d bring a good book, sunscreen, and a jar of crunchy peanut butter.

Erin Galloway

Field Crew Assistant Manager

Where are you from?

I grew up in North Vancouver and have been lucky enough to call Squamish home for the past couple of years.

What is the story behind your photo?

This photo was taken at the Gargoyles in Garibaldi Provincial Park last summer. It’s definitely one of my favorite viewpoints in the park (this picture doesn’t do it justice)!

What’s your favourite way to spend a day off?

Lately the weather has required me to spend my days off by a body of water! My favourite way to spend a day off is to hike to an alpine lake.

If you were a plant, what would you be and why?

If I was a plant I would be a Pacific madrone (Arbutus menziesii). Like an arbutus tree, I could not live too far from the coast.

What are you most looking forward to while working with SSISC this summer?

I’m looking forward to working outside with some awesome people and conducting invasive freshwater mussel sampling in a few of the Sea to Sky’s lakes.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 items would you bring with you?

I would definitely bring lots of water, a plant ID book to figure out what was edible, and a satellite phone to call for help.

Erin Schott

Field Crew Lead Hand

Where are you from?

I am from Alberta originally but moved to B.C. about 6 years ago and have never looked back! I love the beautiful West Coast!

What is the story behind your photo?

This photo was taken during a trip around Rohr lake near Pemberton. The trip was for a friend’s birthday and we ended up going to the Wendy Thompson hit first, which is near where this photo was taken 🙂

What’s your favourite way to spend a day off?

On my days off I like to climb, explore, camp, enjoy live music and the company of good friends. Sometimes I like to get away from Squamish, like a mini vacation!

If you were a plant, what would you be and why?

If I were a plant, I would be stairstep moss (Hyclomium splendens), because it looks very delicate and feathery but is actually very tough and resilient!

What are you most looking forward to while working with SSISC this summer?

I am most looking forward to being outside everyday and seeing the results of last year’s treatments. It’s so interesting going back to sites you have previously treated and seeing how effective the treatment was!

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 items would you bring with you?

If I were stranded on a desert island, I would bring a knife, a book about the flora and fauna of the island, and a water filter. Hopefully I would survive with this!

Spread the love
