For many, fall means crispy golden leaves, pumpkin-spiced lattes, and Gilmore Girls. For us, at SSISC, it means saying goodbye to our amazing Banish Burdock volunteers. We’ll miss them!
This summer, 13 enthusiastic teams combatted one of Whistler’s most notorious invasive plants, Common Burdock. Burdock is easily spotted by its large, heart-shaped, wavy leaves and its signature circular spiky burs. Each volunteer picked a section of Whistler’s Valley trail or another public land spot to keep Burdock-free for the summer.
After a quick orientation and equipped with a shovel, cones, and a highly fashionable high-visibility jacket, they were ready to take on Burdock! Together, these teams have created more habitats for native plants to thrive. We appreciate each of them and hope to welcome them all back next year!

To express our thanks, we have teamed up with Forged Axe Throwing, Altitude Fitness, and The Adventure Group to offer prizes to three wonderful volunteers. This year’s draw prize winners are Melanie Truscott, Jillian Martin, and Paddy Smyth! We want to thank the local businesses that generously supported the program by offering in-kind donations.
We hope you’ll join us for Banish Burdock 2024!
