SSISC is excited to announce that we’ve just launched our online Invasive-Free Certification course!
We have been offering this program in-person for nearly 10 years, thanks to generous funding from the Whistler Community Foundation. However, with the limitations on in-person gatherings due to the pandemic, among other challenges, we decided it was time to pivot and transition our course into an online format. This now allows participants to enjoy self-paced learning, from the comfort of their own home, patio, local coffee shop, or office.
The goal of this program is to integrate targeted invasive species management into the practices of horticulture, landscaping, and earth-moving companies serving the Sea to Sky Corridor, and recognize those companies contributing to stopping the spread of invasive species. The course curriculum includes:
- Intro to Invasive Species – what they are, why we care, where they come from
- Invasive Plants – how to identify 21 invasive plants
- Invasive Animals – how to identify 6 invasive animals
- Invasive Plant Control – what the different control methods are and how / when to apply them
- What You Can Do – specific tips to prevent further spread of invasives in the Sea to Sky
These modules are broken down into 1-3 minute video lessons, followed by short quizzes and a final exam.
Participants can expect the course to take 2-2.5 hours to complete. The course costs just $35 per participant, which covers part of SSISC’s costs to run the program; the remainder of our costs are generous covered by grants from our partners, including the Whistler Community Foundation.
After completing the course, participants will have the knowledge and ability to identify, report, and arrange removal of invasive species in the Sea to Sky region. Companies will be considered “Invasive-Free Certified” once a minimum of 50% of their staff (including all supervisors and crew leads) have completed the Invasive-Free online course. These companies can then access discounted rates for disposal of invasive plant matter at local landfills, will be promoted on SSISC’s website and social media, and have year-round support and consultation from SSISC’s expert team.
