As summer wraps up, SSISC is gearing up for the winter season with some exciting changes to our team! We’re bidding a fond farewell to Becky and Rebecca, while congratulating James on his well-deserved promotion from Field Crew to GIS Technician.
For those who are new to SSISC, we’re dedicated to protecting the Sea to Sky region from invasive species. Our work spans two main areas: an active Education & Outreach Department and a hard-working Field Team. Summer is our busiest time of year, with invasive plants thriving and events happening left and right! Our Field Team is in full swing, tackling plant removal and monitoring, while the Education & Outreach Team organizes volunteer programs and community outreach events.
Come October, as the chill sets in and the snow starts to fall, most invasive plants naturally die back or get buried under snow. This means that our Field Crew takes a seasonal pause, and our Education & Outreach Department hits ‘pause’ on volunteer activities for a short while.
In winter, we shift gears—our team says goodbye to some members while others move into more data-focused roles. And yes, that means diving into data entry and reporting! Keep reading to find out more about what’s in store for our team this winter.
Goodbye team!
Earlier this month, we said a heartfelt goodbye to Rebecca McDonald, our amazing Invasive Animals Program Coordinator. Rebecca may have only spent a year with us, but wow—what a year it has been! She’s made incredible strides with our invasive animals program, including leading the charge on our Crab Team volunteer program. This year, she assembled three teams of volunteers to monitor Howe Sound (Átl’ka7tsem) for invasive European green crabs.
Rebecca is now off to take on a new adventure as Environmental Stewardship Major Projects Coordinator with the Musqueam Nation! We’re going to miss her energy, leadership, and passion around here. Thank you, Rebecca—you’ve been fantastic, and we’ll miss you!
We’re also saying goodbye to Becky Turner, our incredible Education & Outreach Coordinator. Becky has been with SSISC for over a year, and during that time, she’s really taken our social media game to the next level with her eco-memes and those awesome Mini Microphone Mondays.
This summer, she ran the Banish Burdock program and organized some seriously successful events! Becky, thank you for all your hard work and creativity—you’ve been amazing, and we’ll miss you!
Congratulations, James!
We’d like to give a HUGE congratulations to James McAllister on his new role! James was part of our Field Crew this summer, and he did such an amazing job that we just couldn’t let him go. He’s now stepping into the role of GIS Technician, where he’ll be transforming all the data our Field Team collected this summer into easy-to-read maps. These maps will help SSISC as we report on our season to funders and plan next season’s removal and monitoring efforts.
Best of luck in the new role, James—we know you’ll crush it!
